Wool

Driven by a lifelong fascination with wool, our breeding philosophy centres around sheep with a high-value fleece that resists fleece rot and fly strike.

We understand the importance of maintaining a balanced approach that optimises wool production, alongside reproduction and survival, as it’s the combination of all aspects that sets the modern merino apart from all other breeds of sheep.

Wool cut and quality

Haddon Rig ewes consistently produce an impressive 7.5 to 8 kilograms of wool in a 12-month shearing cycle. This wool is exceptionally soft, white, and fine at 19 microns. These results significantly surpass the industry averages, with our Adult Clean Fleece Weight standing at an average of 23 kilograms and Yearling Clean Fleece Weight at 23.8 kilograms. This highlights the superior quality and yield of our flock, setting a new benchmark in wool production.

Traits

Adult Clean Fleece Weight

ACFW estimates the genetic difference in fleece weight at 540 days of age. A positive Fleece Weight ASBV means a genetically heavier cutting animal. An ASBV of 20% means the animal will cut 20% more wool than the average.

Haddon Rig rams have adult clean fleece weights (ACFW) 30% higher than the industry average, indicating the ability of HR progeny to cut large quantities of wool throughout their entire lifetimes.

Yearling Clean Fleece Weight

YCFW estimate the genetic difference in fleece weight at 360 days of age.

  • Yearling Clean Fleece Weight (YCFW) for HR Polls is over 50% above the industry average, demonstrating the ability of HR progeny to cut more wool over their entire lifetimes.
