HR+ Update October Edition

OCTOBER HR+UPDATE

Dear Sheep Breeder,

We're still reeling from a successful On-Property and Online auction on Thursday 10th September - it was great to catch up with a lot of our clients and friends, and to see the team rally to put a great day on mid-COVID! Please find a recap below of the day, as well as our plan for the rest of 2020.

Looking to the end of the year we will be conducting private ram sales through the rest of September - please reach out to Andy (0429 662 226) or your stud representative to arrange. Our general shearing will start in October, ahead of a large AI and ET program through November and hopefully a good crop harvest!

As always, we are committed to premium progeny and best practice to improve your bottom line. Please get in touch with the team if there is anything we can do to support you going forward.

Best wishes,

George Falkiner

HR 37TH ANNUAL SALE RECAP

Thank you to all who travelled near and far to the 37th Annual Haddon Rig On-Property Ram Sale. We had a tremendous result with a total of 228 rams sold across 65 registered buyers. The top Merino price for the day was a $12,000 ram, which was bought by Jo and James Morris from "Bonanza", Lightning Ridge. James said "He stood out above the rest. His figures are really good and he's a big upstanding ram which will fit well in our operation. He's very even overall and weighs 125 kg, so will be joined to 70 or 80 of our elite ewes." This ram was one of 141 Merinos offered, which sold for an average of $2,526 - an increase of $177 from last year's average. The top price Poll Merino also made $12,000 and was bought by the Carrigan Family from "Tyrone Merinos", Gurley. Said Angus Carrigan "He's a big upstanding ram with a very well defined crimp and productive skin... He'll cut a lot of wool and go into our stud to breed our own flock rams." This ram is one of 90 Poll Merinos offered, which achieved an average of $3,211 - an increase of $634 from last year's average.

We were proud to welcome 15 new clients and be supported by the return visits of our loyal clients from all across Australia chasing early-maturing, fertile Merino and Poll Merino rams with high quality wool. This group includes the Wilson family from "Myall" Lightning Ridge who paid $9,000 for the second top-priced Merino, and the Jackel family from "Tarbunkenup Stud" Ongerup, WA who purchased two rams at a $4,750 average for their daughter stud.

Haddon Rig clients consistently report impressive returns for their sheep, as evidenced by our client success stories which can be found on our blog. Haddon Rig rams breed to a type, are consistent, fertile and have high lambing percentages.

Haddon Rig will continue to work with our new and existing clients to improve their sheep enterprises and their bottom lines; taking advantage of the strong meat market and hopefully improving wool market. We look forward to seeing the returns these clients receive for lambs born of HR Sires purchased at the 2020 Sale.

Thanks to all our clients who continue to support Haddon Rig, and the team at HR who are so instrumental to our success. Thanks also to Nutrien Ag and Elders for your services, and Paul Dooley for the Auctioneering and to AuctionsPlus for a terrific job running the show online.

FARMING OPERATIONS UPDATE

We’re very lucky to have a stand-out farming team at HR including Robert Latham (Farming Manager), Jack Robertson (Assistant Manager) Matt Toole, Blake Crossingham, Jacob Cziszlowski and Tim Hall.

We’ve been busy this year (and very fortunate to have some much-needed rain in both our irrigated and dryland country!). This year we’ve planted a mixture of rotation crops including Canola 44T02, Lupins Luxor, Chickpeas Hattrick, Barley Sparticus and we are also hoping to get some 748B3F Cotton planted in October.

Our challenge this year was a very wet planting window as opposed to the super dry planting conditions of the past few years! It’s been very rewarding to see some great crop growth this year - injecting some much-needed nutrients back into the soil, guaranteeing feed through the dry Summer months and hopefully some cash crop income later this year. A huge thank you to the farming team at HR for their continued hard work!

We are also looking for a stand-out helper for our harvest. If you or anyone in your network is responsible, hard-working, good with machinery and looking for work through Summer - please reach out to Robert (0428 565 796).

For more cropping tips and updates, please reach out to Robert (robert@haddon-rig.com.au).
